From Austin Airport
Take TX71 west to I-35. West of I-35, TX71 and US290 (also Ben White Boulevard) share roadway for several miles. Take US290 west to y-intersection where US290 again diverges from TX71 (follow directions Johnson City, continuing on US290, not TX71). Take US290 west to Johnson City (follow signs, US290 and US281 share roadway for a short distance as you drive northward towards Johnson City). Continue on US290 west to Fredericksburg (about 30 miles west of Johnson City).
From San Antonio Airport
Take I-410 westward to I-10 (direction - west - El Paso). Exit and take I-10 west (direction El Paso). About 40 miles later, take US87 north (signed Fredericksburg). Note, until this exit US87 and US290 share the roadway and many "Business 87" signs dot the landscape -- stay on I-10 until you see the US87 - Fredericksburg sign, after Waring and just before you get to Comfort, TX). Exit and take US87 northward to Fredericksburg (about 20 miles).
From Dallas/Ft. Worth
Those eager to maximise their trip on the Interstate would take I-35 southward to Georgetown. At Georgetown, exit and drive west on TX29 through Burnet to Llano. In Llano, turn left and take TX16 south to Fredericksburg.
For those looking for more scenery and fewer heavy trucks, take US67 to Cleburne. Then travel south on TX174 to Meridian. From Meridian, utilize TX22 to Hamilton. From Hamilton, travel south on US281 to Evant. Here, turn right and travel west on US84 to Goldthwaite. In Goldthwaite, turn left and travel south on TX16 through San Saba and Llano, then continue southward to Fredericksburg.
From Houston
One straightforward route from Houston to San Antonio utilizes I-10 for almost its entire route. Some might be tempted to drive through Austin, but note that eternal construction between the "new" Austin airport and I-35 can severely increase driving time. From Houston, take I-10 to Loop I-410 in San Antonio. Follow the loop northward, back to I-10 (direction El Paso). About 40 miles later, take US87 north (signed Fredericksburg). Note, between I-410 and this exit, US87 and US290 share the roadway and many "Business 87" signs dot the landscape -- stay on I-10 until you see the US87 - Fredericksburg sign, after Waring and just before you get to Comfort, TX). Exit and take US87 northward to Fredericksburg (about 20 miles).
From the Panhandle
From Amarillo, travel south on I-27 to Lubbock. From Lubbock, travel south on US84 to I-20 (at Sweetwater). Take I-20 east to Abiline. Approaching Abilene, take Exit 279 and drive east on US84 (also Business I-20). Turn right on US277/US84. Continue south on US84/US83 (do not exit when US277 diverges). Continue south on US84 (do not exit when US83 diverges - do take direction Santa Anna.) In Santa Anna, turn south on US283, to Brady. In Brady, take US87 south to Mason. Continue south on US87 to Fredericksburg.
From West Texas
From Big Spring or San Angelo:
Take US87 southeast to Brady, then Mason, then Fredericksburg
From the Trans-Pecos and points West:
Take I-10 eastward to Junction. Southeast of Junction, exit at US290 and drive eastward to Fredericksburg.
