Cars and Trucks
Motorists pay taxes too! We encourage all cyclists utilizing Gillespie County roads to acknowledge the local cars have just as much right to road as the cyclists. This thought turns on its head the many nonsensical arguments from motorists that cyclists do not have rights to the road. The best insurance against heated altercations with motorists is the conscious practice of common courtesy on the part of cyclists.
- Always obey traffic laws. Stop signs, stop lights, etc., apply to cyclists too-you may have a right to ride on the road but please don't ride like a jerk!
- Ride single file when traffic approaches from the rear.
- When riding two or more abreast and traffic approaches from the rear, call out the pan-U.S. traffic-approaching notification "car back!". Repeat it if you believe some riders may not have heard it, or if some remain two abreast.
- The use of glasses-mounted rear-view mirrors is encouraged. Though it severely degrades the requisite roadie cool factor, an awareness of fast approaching traffic might be life saving. Remember, to be for-warned is to be for-armed.
- When riding alone and traffic approaches from the rear, but it is still at a good distance of about 50 meters, glance back at the car to let the driver know you see him/her. A subsequent obvious shift toward the shoulder illustrates goodwill and frequently results in the driver yielding a wide berth.
